Fishing and Travel Reports

A short description about your blog

Full moon this week and the permit seemed to be grouped together in large schools in Ascension Bay, fish were somewhat more spread out in Espiritu Santo Bay. Those anglers who found the schools had great luck and pretty much every guest caught permit. Mike Y, a Fly Odyssey guest, managed four permit as his tally. Helen and Vince M each managed two. Pete D, a newcomer to saltwater fly fishing, also caught his first permit this week, and Barabara A kept up with her streak of at least one permit for every visit she's made to Casa Blanca over the years.  Two grand slams this week, and ideal angling weather. Bonefishing was steady and Santa Rosa fished well, for those few who could tear themselves away from the flats. As a side note, the green turtles have begun to come up onto the beach to lay their eggs, apparently drawing the attention of the resident Jaguar-four sightings this week  by guests and staff.

An ideal week weather wise with mild winds and good visibility. The moon is heading toward full and for the most part anglers are seeing large schools of permit, as opposed to singles. Between both lodges some very nice permit caught, up to 30 pounds, along with 1 grand slams and one super grand slam. Large migratory tarpon have been seen and tried for, though not in great numbers. Bonefish are plentiful, with some larger specimens being found in the backcountry.

One of the busiest weeks of the season with one of our annual Mountain Angler trips at Playa and a full house at Casa. Playa anglers managed an impressive tally of 13 permit and one grand slam this week, 14 tarpon, 1 snook and hundreds of bonefish. Winds were out of the north which made conditions a little tougher on Ascension Bay anglers, though it was still a great week. 3 permit caught along with lots of tarpon and some very nice bonefish.

Challenging week weather wise, with thunderstorms and stout winds out of the south, fairly constant cloud cover and several tropical downpours. Just the same, anglers this week worked hard, had fun, and got it done. Permit tally for the week, 9. One grand slam by Dwain M, two first time permit by Scott K and Kris V. Kris took his twelve pounder off the Casa Blanca dock late at night. After putting in some serious time his determination paid off on the last night. A good mix of new to salt water anglers and veterans this week, great bone fishing, some large snook and tarpon also.

The lodges were closed during these two weeks to cater to a private party. Lots of fun had by all, with snorkeling and sight seeing tours, but very little fishing. The waters in our secret spots were rested and ready for the next batch of clients April 14-21.  At night off the Casa Blanca dock lots of permit have been around, and I was able to catch one about ten pounds during this time, a hard fighting and happy fish.

Wonderful weather week with fish tallies to prove it. Our biannual WorldCast Anglers group couldn't have had it any better. Great sun, minimal wind, and a lot of hungry permit found in schools and deeper water...spawn time? 17 total permit for the week. Veteran Chris L. caught one to three permit every day out, while newcomers to saltwater fly fishing, Mike and Suzanne, managed two in one day and a total of three for the week, prompting them to wonder what the hype is all about, permit are easy! Some big tarpon in the bay also this week, Mike D got an eighty pounder that engulfed the fly on the surface before it had a chance to sink, and Johnny, on a management mental health day, jumped another eighty pounder. I was lucky enough to fish two days this week and caught a permit each day. Hopeful that this weather will hold! More photos to come...

This week featured steady medium to strong winds and varied cloud cover, but with large groups at both lodges ranging from first time salt water anglers to salty veterans, the week was a success on many levels.Out of the eight permit caught for the week, some were huge (25 to 35 pounds) also some 20-25 pound snook found cruising out in the bay, one super slam by Bill A, and one 25 pound permit taken by 87 year old Hill B, plus some very nice tarpon, and great bonefish action, all in all a great week.

Medium to strong winds this week and intermittent cloud cover. Permit tally for the week, 7, two of which were firsts- Chris W, and Patti B, great job, both on the permit and eating that scorpion like pros! One grand slam, and some great snook fishing out in the bay, with fish up t0 25 lbs. Patti B also caught her first tarpon and snook, so did Ed A and Richard H, both really nice fish. Young angler Colin W caught his first bonefish on a fly. A fantastic week of firsts.

This week we had some of the strongest winds of the season so far, sustained 28-30mph and out of the north-north east for four days. Not an easy card to draw for fishermen, but anglers made the best of it, worked hard, and made their opportunities count. Six permit caught, three tagged for the BTT Caribbean tagging program. A bunch of first permit- congrats to Brent D., Carla B., and Tiffany Y, all ate the scorpion with gusto. Congrats to Ashley D. for her first bonefish, and Allison R on her first tarpon. A great week of firsts in challenging conditions. A bunch of photos this week...

Another week of fair weather. Ideal fishing conditions in both the backcountry for tarpon, snook, and bonefish, and out in the bays for permit. Anglers did well targeting permit, with the tally for the week coming in at five, plus a few heartbreaking escapes. Congrats to Joe S on his super grand slam this week, and to Chris U. who took up fly fishing for the first time with us and proved a quick study, with lots of bonefish, barracudas, and tarpon under his belt by the end. A few photos from the week...
